Joining the National Pan-Hellenic Council

Organizations within the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), bring in new members to the community using a process called membership intake. Each organization decides when it will host an intake process based on their national guidelines and expectations

NPHC Membership Intake

National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations begin their membership intake processes by hosting an informational event. These events provide aspirants, or prospective members, information about the intake process and membership guidelines.

It's important to note that these processes are discrete. Intake information for organizations will often be posted on flyers around campus and on social media. We suggest following chapters on social media to stay updated on upcoming chapter events. Attending chapter events, whether intake events or not, is a great way to learn more about organizations and get to know the members.

While NPHC intake processes differ from chapter to chapter, many organizations utilize similar guidelines and expectations. You can find the answers to a variety of commonly asked questions below. Should you have additional questions, feel free to reach out to the NPHC Executive Council or the Fraternity and Sorority Student Life team

FSPS Requirements: Aspirants a university mandated trainings (Greek alcohol and other drugs, Greek Consent Conversation, hazing and reporting training) within the first semester of joining an organization.

Council Requirements: Attend Greekdom 101 or Greekdom 2.0 during the year you are planning to apply for membership.

Organization Requirements: All organizations have different, specific requirements for their aspirants. These could include, but are not limited to:

  • GPA above 2.75
  • Letter(s) of recommendation
  • Proof of recent community service hours
  • Attendance at an informational/interest meeting

Please be sure to visit the organization's national website for specifics. Attending an chapter informational event is a great way to learn more about the organization's specific membership intake process and requirements.

Here are a few tips for expressing interest in an NPHC organization.

Do:

  • We suggest getting to know the organization as a whole, learning more about the organization at the national level and it's founding values.
  • Allow your work ethic, resume, and campus involvement to speak for itself.
  • Introduce yourself at a chapter program. Your continued participation and active involvement will speak for itself.

Do not:

  • Remember, our council is small. Whether you are interested in a particular organization over another, speaking positively about other organizations is very important.
  • This experience is about you. It may be tempting to share how many people you know that are members of an organization, but it doesn't help you in the long run.
  • Do not announce your intentions to other students. Remember discretion is key.

Greekdom 101 (Fall) and Greekdom 2.0 (Spring) is a mandatory program for anyone considering joining an NPHC organization. Our chapters will be in their organization's version of business attire. That does not mean you have to come in business attire.

Wear whatever makes you feel the most comfortable and confident, while also understanding there will be a breakout time for you to have face time with the NPHC organizations on campus.

While NPHC organizations are historically Black, we are not exclusively Black. Each organization has members of varying races and ethnicities across their chapters.

Membership fees are set by individual organizations. The average cost to join an NPHC organization is anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 for one-time initiation fees.

After that, members can expect semesterly or yearly dues required by headquarters in order to remain active and financial. These dues range from $75-$500 depending on the organization. You will be given definitive pricing should an invitation for membership be extended.

 Membership Dues Include:

  • Most chapter programs and events
  • Regional and National expenses
  • Other operating costs as outlined by the organization

Please note, there are no payment plan options for initiation fees.
