New York, New York – September 9th: Sanctions placed on Libya in 1992 after Moammar Gadhafi refused to surrender
two men wanted in connection to the 1988 Pan Am bombing are under scrutiny
by the UN and face a vote before Security Council. France, however, threatened to veto the resolution because
they have not finalized an agreement with Libya to increase compensation for victims of the 1989 bombing
of a French airliner over Niger.
The sanctions
were indefinitely suspended in 1999 after the two Libyans were handed
over for trial, but Libya has pressed for the embargoes to be lifted entirely
to restore its standing in the international community. Britain and the US have said Libya has met all the requirements to lift the strictures,
however the US plans to continue their own sanctions even if the UN
lifts its own. If the resolution is approved, the ban on arms sales and
air links would end immediately. The vote is scheduled for Friday.
