Statement
of purpose
The Sooner
Scientific is an interdisciplinary undergraduate research journal at
the University of Oklahoma. The purpose of The Sooner Scientific
is
two-fold: first, to encourage, recognize, and reward intellectual
activity beyond the classroom, and secondly, The Sooner Scientific
provides a form for the exchange and dissemination of research and
ideas on the OU campus.
Deadlines
Early Submission - December 9
Final Deadline - to be determined
Author
Agreement
The Author Agreement Form must be signed and returned to The Sooner
Scientific before a manuscript can be accepted for publication.
The purpose of this form is to ensure mentor approval and review of
each student's Work . By
signing this form, the Author warrants and represents that all the
facts contained in the Work are true and accurate, and that the Work is
original and does not infringe upon any copyright, proprietary, or
personal right of any third party. If the Work is submitted to another journal for
publication, The Sooner Scientific must be notified so that the
processing of the Work can be stopped in the event that duplicate
publication violates the other journal's policy on exclusivity of
rights. The Sooner Scientific assumes no responsibility for
duplicat publication.
The Author Agreement Form can be found here
and should be submitted to the Chemistry Office in the Chemistry
Building.
Guidelines
Submission
to The Sooner Scientific is mainly restricted to undergraduates
conducting research in science or engineering. For applicable
fields, click here, or email scientific@ou.edu with any
questions. All research papers should include:
1.
Title
2.
Introduction describing the background and purpose of the work
3. Experimental section
including both methods and results
4. Concluding section
discussing the results and their implications,
5. Bibliography of
references for all sources consulted.
Recommendations
In writing
your paper, please strive to make the research objectives, methods,
data and analysis accessible to a broad but well-educated
audience. Emphasis should
not be placed on
explanation of
techniques, but rather articles should be able to explain how their
research is original and
unique and how it contributes to the larger
scheme of things.
Papers
should read more like an article in Scientific American, rather than an
article in a more technical journal. A general guideline to
follow is to make your article understandable to a well-informed
undergraduate in your major. For example, a biochemistry major
does not need to explain the basic idea of a Polymerase Chain Reaction.
References
Since
every discipline requires different style guidelines such as APA, MLA,
etc., students must consult with their Mentor/Faculty Sponsor to
determine which style is appropriate for the field in which the
research is conducted.
