JCPenney Spring 2019

JCPenney Leadership Program Summer 2019 E-News

Message from the Director

It’s hard to believe that I am already celebrating my first work anniversary as the Director of the JCPenney Leadership Center! It has been a busy year filled with building relationships with Associates, alumni and corporate partners, and executing new programming while enhancing established events. It is truly an honor to work with these phenomenal young leaders, and I am continuously impressed with their commitment to our program.

Earlier this semester, the Parker Leadership Conference attracted student attendees from all over the OU campus to participate in this active learning event and hear from keynote speaker Ethan Berman. Mr. Berman was the founder of RiskMetrics and is responsible for endowing this annual conference in honor of Ken Parker. Coming up soon is our Alumni Career Conference, our final campus wide event of the year, on April 26th. Our alumni are an incredible point of pride for our program and also an incredible resource for our students. For these reasons, it is not hard to see why the Alumni Career Conference is one of our most popular events! This year’s theme is “The Next Step,” and registration is now open and can be found here.

For those of you already looking at the fall semester, mark your calendars for the Women in Business Leadership Conference that will be held on campus on Friday, October 18th. Beyond just attending, we are always looking for alumni who are interested in participating in conferences as well as other events. If you are interested in connecting with our program, contact us today!

We also have two new events this semester that have been exciting additions to our already-impressive programming schedule. Later this month, our very first C-Suite for a Day event will provide an opportunity for over 15 of our Associates to shadow executives from a variety of industries for a day. Our Associates will have the opportunity to see what life is really like in the c-suite in terms of meetings and interactions with employees and out in the community, but they will also have one-on-one time with their executive where they can hear about their leadership story.

Our second addition utilizes our Peer Trainers’ existing programming and mentoring skills to create a one-hour Professional Development presentation that has been offered to organizations on campus and in the Norman/OKC area in the month of April. So far, Peer Trainers have presented to high school students at Bridges of Norman, an establishment for homeless students, and hosted a presentation on campus for National Honor Society students from the Mercy School Institute in Edmond. In the coming weeks, we will present to student-athletes, students in the Honors College, and more. I was immediately impressed when I observed the mentoring and training skills of our Peer Trainers last fall, and I couldn’t be more pleased that we are sharing this talent and helpful professionalism information with our community.

Finally, I am so excited to share that this year’s Study Abroad trip was a huge success! Participating Associates spent a week visiting a variety of companies, learning about Costa Rica and enjoying as much of the country’s natural beauty that we could squeeze into our itinerary! Studying abroad is such a special, formative experience for our Associates, and we are incredibly fortunate that we are able to have an exclusive program available just for our Program and scholarships available to help students take advantage of this opportunity. We are still raising money for our 25 for 25 campaign that will help us endow a new scholarship that will provide even more opportunities for JCPenney Associates to study abroad, and I encourage you to give if you are able! Special thanks to our Associate, Mansi Patel, who put together a video that captures the amazing experience we had this Spring Break! Enjoy it here.

Our next newsletter will come from our outgoing Chair, Erin Hyun, who will reflect on this past year. I look forward to reading it as I simply can’t capture all of the exciting things the JCPenney Leadership Program is doing in my semesterly newsletter! Don’t forget that you can keep up with all of our activities and adventures in real time by following us on social media!
