Professor, Integrative Studies

Steve Gullberg, Ph.D. is a professor of integrative studies for the OU College of Professional and Continuing Studies. He is a retired airline captain, a long-time adjunct instructor for the college, and an active member in the International Astronomical Union (IAU), the prestigious worldwide organization of astronomers whose mission is to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation. There he serves as the IAU’s chair for Astronomy in Culture and is a member of the IAU committee that names stars. 

Gullberg received a master's degree in liberal studies from the University of Oklahoma and a Ph.D. in astronomy from James Cook University. His research focus marries two of his passions, archaeology, and astronomy, in the emerging field of archaeoastronomy. During his doctoral work, he measured the astronomical alignments of light and shadow effects upon Inca huacas at times of solstices, as well as on the dates of the equinoxes and the zenith and anti-zenith sun. He is widely published and continues to present on his research at international conferences as a true expert in the field. He also is the editor of the Journal of Astronomy in Culture.

In addition to his research résumé, Gullberg is an accomplished pilot, having flown with the Air Force, the Air Force Reserve, and as an American Airlines captain. After a long and exemplary career, Gullberg retired from the Air Force Reserve as a lieutenant colonel with a total of 32 years of military service. He as well helped start a new airline in Barbados.
