Transferring to OU? Get the Most Out of Your Past Experience

February 14, 2023

Maybe you’ve completed an associate degree and are ready to get your bachelor’s degree, or maybe you started a degree years ago and are now able to finish what you started. Whatever your reasons for transferring to a different institution, you’ll want to plan ahead to make sure your courses, and in some cases job training, come with you when you change schools.

If you’re transferring to the University of Oklahoma from another institution, many of the credits you earned at regionally accredited institutions can be applied to your online undergraduate degree at the College of Professional and Continuing Studies.

Here’s how to get the most out of your prior learning experience.

Make sure you meet the qualifications

In order to transfer to the OU College of Professional and Continuing Studies, you must meet certain admission requirements, including a minimum number of letter-graded college credit hours. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you can still be considered for admission.

You can learn more about admission requirements and the application process by visiting our website.

Explore options to help you pay

If you’re transferring from another institution, OU offers many options to help you pay for your education.

In addition to financial aid, the OU College of Professional and Continuing Studies offers several scholarships. It’s highly recommended that you apply for any scholarships you qualify for, even if you don’t think you’ll receive one.

Ask for a transfer evaluation

A transfer evaluation before you enroll will help you determine how many of your college credits from other institutions can be applied to your OU degree. Transfer credits can include prior learning or experiences completed at former institutions and, in some cases, job experience.

If you’re transferring from a community college, you can bring credit hours with you from your two-year institution. If you have an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science from an Oklahoma two-year, regionally accredited school, your general education requirement will be waived, including math and foreign language.

If your associate degree is from out of state or is an applied science associate degree, our staff will evaluate the credits on a course-by-course basis. Your military experience and law enforcement experience will also be evaluated.

After you apply and submit your transcripts, our advisors will look at your history and determine what and how your past experiences will transfer. You may realize you can graduate more quickly than you thought after your credits are transferred, saving you both time and money. Visit our website to learn about transferring your college credits.
