February is Black History Month – a chance for all Americans to celebrate Black achievement and stories, and to reflect on longstanding systemic inequalities.
The monthlong observance is also a time to learn about the experiences of those in our own communities, whose stories shed light on how far we’ve come while revealing the challenges that linger.
One of the people who helped transform the University of Oklahoma community is Dr. George Henderson, distinguished professor emeritus who founded OU’s Department of Human Relations and served as the first African American dean on the Norman campus. When Henderson and his family first arrived in Norman in 1967, they were the first and only Black family to live in town.
