Academic Advising

Our staff works individually with students to provide exceptional, supportive
and constant assistance to help students reach their academic goals.

About Academic Advising

General advising for freshmen is provided by University College, a non-degree granting college that focuses on helping students make the transition to the university and provides them with academic advising and a variety of counseling and coaching activities to help them select a major and achieve academic success. Once students are admitted to Mewbourne College, they are advised by academic counselors in the college. However, freshmen students are encouraged and welcome to connect with Mewbourne College advisors and ask questions.

Scholastic Regulations

  1. Current OU students who have completed at least 24 credit hours, including CHEM 1315 and either MATH 1823 and 2423 or MATH 1914 with a C or better, and have an OU retention and combined retention GPA of 2.5 or higher are eligible for admission into the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy.
  2. Transfer students who have been admitted into the University of Oklahoma, have a minimum 2.5 retention GPA, and have completed at least 24 credit hours of undergraduate coursework, including CHEM 1315 and either MATH 1823 and 2423 or MATH 1914 with a C or better, are eligible for admission into the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy.

Mewbourne College students must maintain a minimum 2.5 combined, OU, semester, and major retention GPA to be in good standing with the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy.

Mewbourne College students must earn a grade of C or better to successfully complete a course required for graduation.

Mewbourne College students are allowed no more than three attempts per course to successfully complete the course. Unsuccessful attempts include earned grades of D, F, I, U, AU, W, and AW.

A student who is dismissed from the Mewbourne College (stopped out) is unlikely to be readmitted. Students are eligible to apply for readmission after at least 2 full (fall and spring) semesters have elapsed since the date of dismissal and they have significantly improved their performance in courses that are technically demanding and relevant to an engineering/science education. Applying for readmission does not guarantee that a student will be readmitted. Each request is considered on its individual merit. If the student is readmitted to the MCEE, the student will be placed on an Academic Performance Contract. Students who are dismissed from the MCEE for a second time are not eligible for readmission.

Please Note: A grade of C or better is required to satisfy course prerequisites. Students who earn D's and/or F's in prerequisite courses may be removed from courses for which they are no longer eligible. Consult your Mewbourne College advisor if you have any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students are required to be advised prior to each enrollment period.  Students are notified of advising periods via e-mail and our weekly student newsletter, EarthLinks.

Although the institutional definition and the financial aid requirement for full-time undergraduate enrollment status are 12 credit hours per regular fall or spring semester, it is impossible to graduate in four years with fewer than 15 credit hours per regular semester or 30 credit hours per academic year.

Most students are capable of taking 15 to 16 hours per semester, and OU encourages you to consider that. However, students who are not pacing their enrollments in such a manner should consider Intersession and/or Summer term enrollments. A student needs to average at least 31 hours of completed and applicable coursework each year to have an opportunity to graduate in four years.

Understanding how to use and read the OU Academic Calendar for each term is the responsibility of an individual student. Please contact the Enrollment Services office at 325-3572 for questions about Cancellation, Drop, and Complete Withdrawal deadlines.
