The mission of the Integrated Core Characterization Center IC3 is to do basic and applied research applicable to the energy sector and train the next generation of engineers who are proficient in the interpretation of subsurface properties.
The center genesis happened in the early nineteen eighties at the Amoco Production Company Research Center in Tulsa, OK. The two principals, Chandra Rai and Carl Sondergeld, reestablished it at the Mewbourne School of Petroleum and Geological Engineering when they joined the University of Oklahoma in 1999. IC3 is the state-of-the-art laboratory which is equipped with advanced analytical equipments for characterizing sub-surface rocks and fluids for better extraction of hydrocarbon and storage of energy. In addition to conducting research, the IC3 provides laboratory service to other universities researchers as well as external entities.
