Research

My research focuses on the interface between soil science and biogeochemistry. I pursue fundamental research in soil carbon cycle- mineral weathering feedbacks and redox cycling in upland soils. I am particularly fascinated by low-oxygen processes in well-drained upland soils. I use this fundamental research on soils to understand the role soils play in modulating the global carbon cycle and terrestrial inputs (pollutant fertilizers, heavy metals, etc.) to surface waters.

I use both manipulated laboratory experiments and in situ monitoring of instrumented watersheds to pursue my research questions.

Areas of Interest

Soil weathering, soil carbon cycle, iron and manganese redox, mineral organic carbon associations, low oxygen processes in soils, interpretation of soil CO2 and O2 concentrations

Courses Taught

GEOL 5970 – Biogeochemistry of the Critical Zone

GEOL 1114 – Introduction to Physical Geology
