Hydrogen Economy Project

Hydrogen Economy Project

The IREES Hydrogen Initiative applies the University of Oklahoma's resouces to catalyze research and innovation across the hydrogen value chain from production, storage and distribution, to applications in transportation and industrial processes. With the goal of accelerating the development and deployment of clean hydrogen across sectors, the IREES Hydrogen Initiative is helping fuel a sustainable energy transition.

Clean hydrogen is a critical success factor for the transition to a sustainable, equitable and affordable low-carbon-energy future. It offers opportunities to tackle key energy challenges, including ways to decarbonize hard-to-decarbonize sectors like long-haul transportation, fertilizer and chemicals manufacturing and steel production, while also improving air quality and strengthening energy security.

Investment in clean hydrogen from the public and private sectors is growing. The IREES Hydrogen Initiative will mobilize the scientific, engineering, policy and training capacity of our university community to help lower costs, improve performance and scale up technologies that will enable hydrogen to become a key part of a sustainable and secure energy future.

Recently, the governors of Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas announced that the three states have entered into a bipartisan partnership to establish the HALO Hydrogen Hub, a regional hub for the development, production, distribution and use of clean hydrogen as fuel and manufacturing feedstock. IREES, working collaboratively with the partner states’ research universities will create a platform to help ease entry into the hydrogen hub, serving as a connection point between industry, civil society and regulatory agencies as well as a resource for research and development, training and workforce development.
