Division News from The ICA Newsletter, May, 2002.

Intercultural/Development Communication

Greetings to friends of Division 5! By the time you receive this newsletter, I'm sure you are preparing for our international conference in Seoul, Korea. It should be quite exciting and informative, especially since we have 25 panels scheduled for this conference. The topics on the panels, the nationalities of the panelists, and the methodological orientations of the studies being reported make this a very diverse program. There should be something for everyone!

Our division meeting is on Thursday, July 18, between 5:15-6:30 in Jade A. Make sure to come to the business meeting to learn of current events and to voice your opinion about issues facing the division. After the division's business meeting, we will have our annual international dinner on Thursday, July 18, at around 7:30 p.m. With so many fine restaurant choices in the Seoul area, division vice-chair, Karin Wilkins is sure we will find an excellent venue for our traditional dinner. If you wish to join us in this festive event, email Karin at <kwilkins.mail.utexas.edu>. Since she will have to make reservations given the size of our gathering (around 50 in DC), please email her with your reservations asap.

During our business meeting, we will be presenting two Lifetime Achievement Awards. The awardees for this year are Bill Gudykunst and Royal Colle. Congratulations to both of you and thank you for your contributions to our field and may future endeavors be productive! I would like to thank our three reviewers-Ev Rogers, Bella Mody, and Young Kim-for their invaluable assistance in the decision-making on this task. I encourage you to come to the business meeting and show your support for the awardees this year. They are truly deserving of our support.

Speaking of support, let me also make an appeal to you to make sure you have indicated Division 5 as one of your division affiliates for your ICA membership. There are many reasons why I believe you should do so. First, our division can boast of a broad base of international involvement, with scholars based in and doing research on countries throughout the world. Second, with numerous awards including "Lifetime Achievement" and "Top Dissertation" awards, it can be said that we are supportive of both traditional and innovative perspectives. Lastly, Division 5 represents a dynamic and inclusive group of scholars; we are receptive to different perspectives, methodologies, and theoretical orientations. In fact, diversity is our hallmark. If you have not done so already, please consider joining our group.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the division's secretary/webmaster, Clemencia Rodriguez. She has created a wonderful and informative web page for the division. The URL is www.ou.edu/idc/. I encourage you to visit the web site and make your own contributions to it by forwarding your web page or other URLs that are relevant to the division to Clemencia (clemencia@ou.edu). She welcomes your additions. Thanks, Clemencia for your hard work!

I look forward to seeing you in Seoul, Korea!
