Division News from The ICA Newsletter, 28/2, July, 2000.

By Bella Mody, Division Chair

Mil gracias to all of you who made the Acapulco conference the intellectually stimulating event it was for Division 5. Thanks to our Mexican advisor Carmen Gomez Mont, and our many presenters. While Rich Wiseman and I were responsible for the logistics of getting a peer-review based program in place, it is your proposals for papers and panels that solely determine intellectual content. Congratulations to all presenters and peer reviewers who guaranteed quality.

Thank you to Rich Wiseman, for the excellent annual dinner arrangements and our new divisional bylaws: please save your bylaw copies so we do not lose them again. Vicente Berdayes, our web site designer will post them on our site, along with your syllabi and announcements (berdayes@saintmarys.edu). Our web site needs your input: www.spcomm.uiuc.edu:8000/ica/intercultural/

Gracias to Bill Gudykunst, Chris Ogan and John Mayo for serving on the Committee that selected our first lifetime achievement award winner, Everett M. Rogers. Ev was also the recipient of an ICA-wide award. Budhaye (in Hindi), Ev! All division achievement award winners this year received certificates featuring a mural celebrating labor in general and their labor in particular; the mural was designed by Mexican artist Diego Rivera for Edsel Ford at the Detroit Institute of Art.

Rich Wiseman (representing our Intercultural membership) will become Division Chair after the Washington 2001 meeting. Gracias to John Mayo and Josep Rota for selecting nominees for elections due this summer for Vice Chair from the International and International Development sections. The candidates are Tom Jacobson from SUNY Buffalo and Karin Wilkins from UT Austin.  Nominees for the secretary (cum web designer) position are Vicente Berdayes from St. Mary's South Bend, and Clemencia Rodriguez (U of Oklahoma as of Fall 2000).

We regret there were a few no-shows at the Acapulco meeting who had not made arrangements in advance for replacements: when we receive enough slots to feature only 50% of submissions, this is immoral. Some one else could have had the chance to present or Chair a session or be a discussant, if you had not agreed to do so. Please take these commitments seriouslyreviewers who defaulted by a few days during SFO program development were not trusted to do reviews for the Acapulco meeting since we have only about a month to do this every year. Rich and I will be afraid to rely on members who did not deliver on their commitments this time around when we design the next program for Washington D.C. If you find you can donate a travel, registration or membership grant to defray costs for a student member of Division 5, please contact ICA HQ with your tax-deductible contribution.

Some commented on the inconsistent use of overhead transparencies: we specify this as a requirement for paper and panel presentations since many of us speak English with a variety of accents that are not understandable to those in the audience from distinct sub-cultures. Gracias to those who remembered to use overheads to complement their verbal presentations: reading at an audience is not the best way to achieve communication.

If you had the honor of being on the Division 5 program in Acapulco, please be sure to check Division 5 as one of your divisional homes when you renew your ICA membership. Do recruit new members for the division too: we need to replace the 40 members we lost since the San Francisco meeting. Your membership dues help us to go beyond paper certificates when we make awards.

ICA board meetings are open to all association members: the mid-year meeting is at NCA (November 8 late-afternoon). If you are willing to work on ICA committees, please email your preference and a short CV to lrand@asc.upenn.edu. We need to enrich the association with our intercultural and international insights.
