Honors College Welcomes New Faculty

Honors College Welcomes New Faculty Member

The Honors College welcomes our newest faculty member, Dr. David Song, who has joined the College as an assistant professor of Asian American Studies. He is teaching one Perspectives course this semester while expanding his class list to include both Perspectives and a Colloquium in Spring 2023.

Dr. Song earned his B.A. in English Literature at Washington University and M.A. in Economic Policy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He earned a Ph.D in Education at Stanford University. Dr. Song was most recently a professor of Asian Studies at Colorado College.

In addition to his teaching, Dr. Song is also working on two different book projects. Multiracial Mandarin is a San Francisco-based ethnographic study of the ethnic and racial dynamics Mandarin language has in public schools. He is also co-authoring Diversity and Difference, a book that uses social network analysis to explore ethnicity, race, friendship-making, class diversities, and institutional diversity projects in higher education.

This semester Professor Song is teaching two sections of his course Ethnicity and Race, which explores definitions of the two concepts, their relationship to each other, and their application in today's world. In the upcoming semester he will be expandind and teaching two other courses, Asian American Studies and Unequal and Racist Schooling. The latter will use ethnography to study schooling and its relation to ethnicity, race, and class in the United States. The course will examine how schools function, particularly with respect to social inequalities, and will illuminate possibilities for institutional change.

With his new position also came a big move to Oklahoma, where Dr. Song has had to acclimate to the ever-changing weather and a new town. When asked about the move he says he has been filling his time biking on the roads north of Norman, where he finds the views scenic and beautiful.

Welcome to the university and to the Honors College community!
