Outdoor Adventure

About the Program

Honors Outdoor Adventure is a club for all things outdoors! Our focus is building Honors community, enjoying and caring for the outdoors, and educating and training students on responsible outdoor recreation. Throughout the fall semester, we host day hikes, weekend camping trips, and other outdoorsy events. In the spring, members attend weekly meetings to train as Guides, learning outdoors skills and safety and preparing to lead OA trips (and their own adventures!) in the future.

We welcome people of all skill levels! Whether you've been backpacking your whole life or you’re interested in starting a new hobby, we'd love to help give you more opportunities to get outdoors! If you have any questions about who we are or our upcoming trips, please reach out to us at oa@ou.edu.

Outdoor Adventure FAQ's

While only incoming Honors students can come on our annual freshman trip, our fall semester activities and trips are open to everyone, and anyone can take our Guide Training course in the spring.

OA Guides are students who have attended a full semester of weekly training meetings and at least one full backpacking trip. Anyone is welcome to apply for the training course, which happens every Spring and can be taken as an optional 1-credit course through the Honors College. Guides learn a variety of backpacking and wilderness safety skills and will have the opportunity to get Red Cross certified in Wilderness First Aid.

The Freshman Trip is an annual backpacking trip in the Pecos Wilderness of New Mexico. Any incoming freshman or newly transferred students who have been accepted into the Honors College can sign up. The trip lasts 6 days, including travel days from Norman, and is led by other OU students who have completed their Guide Training. Although backpacking is a physically demanding activity, we try to make our trips as accommodating to various skill levels as possible, and OA is definitely a great way to be introduced to backpacking!
