Honors College Writing Center

Honors College Writing Center

In the Honors College, we believe that writing is an essential tool for critical thinking and disseminating new ideas and research. Students who achieve excellence in their writing abilities will have a strong advantage in competing for scholarships and fellowships, applying to grad school, and becoming leaders in their future careers. The Honors College Writing Center is one of the ways we go the extra mile to help students fulfill their potential as writers and thinkers. Unlike most university writing centers, our Writing Assistants review the students' papers before they meet with them, allowing more time and reflection to provide extensive feedback.

About

The Honors College Writing Center (HCWC) provides free one-on-one writing tutorial help for all Honors students. Well-trained Writing Assistants provide thoughtful feedback to help Honors students achieve excellence in their writing skills. Many of the students visiting the HCWC are enrolled in HON 2973/2963: Perspectives, our introductory required courses that contain a substantial writing component. Many others come on the recommendation of a friend or professor because they know the HCWC provides a valuable service to student writers. The philosophy of the HCWC is that strong writing emerges when careful thinkers develop interesting ideas, express those ideas imperfectly upon the page, and then carefully rework "rough" writing until it shines. The HCWC offers guidance through these steps, and our Writing Assistants work hard to instill in students the belief that, with effort and time, they can become truly skillful writers.

Meet the Team

Carter Cole

Major: Accounting and Finance

My work in the writing center revolves around helping other students grow their interest in writing. Throughout the semester, I watch students continuously improve their writing and find an interest in their own style. I am looking forward to seeing how the students write and discover their voices this year.

Katlyn Don Carlos

Major: Professional Writing

The writing center has been an amazing place to work, and I love working through a diverse set of problems with students of all fields. Everyone writes differently, and the writing center has been a place where those differences are made into strengths.

Catherine Hartman

Major: French, International Studies. Pre-Law

Working at the Writing Centers allows me to work with students of all different majors and levels of writing experience. I thoroughly enjoy learning about other students' approaches to writing and helping them develop their own styles and skillsets so that they can feel confident in both the writing they produce and their own abilities as they navigate the world of academic writing.

In the writing center, I work with Honors Perspectives students to edit, draft, or finalize the writing assignments for that class. My favorite thing about the writing center is how it focuses on peers working together and helping one another. It allows for a great environment to be created and a positive exchange of ideas to happen!

I love helping other students with their writing and talking about the great ideas they have in their papers! It's great to be part of the process and to work with students to develop their ideas and improve the confidence they have in their own writing.
