Academic Advising

Academic advising at Gibbs College is a student-centered, collaborative experience shaped by the NACADA Core Values. Advisors work closely with students to clarify degree requirements, connect them with campus and professional resources, and support thoughtful decision-making that nurtures both academic progress and personal growth.

Our approach responds to the distinct challenges of design, technical, and planning disciplines. Advising is tailored to each student’s evolving goals, whether they are selecting a program, preparing for studio reviews, or exploring graduate school and licensure. At Gibbs, advising is not a checklist. It is a meaningful partnership that enriches the student experience and fosters long-term success.

For major-specific questions, please contact the appropriate advisor or email gcaadvising@ou.edu.

Advisor and Student Responsibilities

At the Gibbs College of Architecture, academic advisors are committed to building inclusive, respectful partnerships that empower students and uphold the highest standards of care and professionalism. In alignment with the NACADA Core Values and the mission of our college, you can expect your advisor to:

  • Provide accurate, up-to-date guidance on University of Oklahoma policies, academic regulations, and degree requirements, including the core curriculum and program-specific expectations.
  • Interpret curriculum and graduation requirements clearly and correctly to support informed, goal-oriented academic planning.
  • Offer referrals to campus resources and opportunities that promote academic, personal, and professional development—connecting you to tutoring, mental health services, career resources, and more.
  • Create a safe, welcoming environment where you feel heard and respected when sharing your goals, concerns, or challenges.
  • Uphold student privacy by maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating a clear understanding of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Monitor your academic progress and maintain accurate, up-to-date records to support meaningful, ongoing advising conversations.
  • Encourage self-advocacy and decision-making by helping you reflect on your values, strengths, and aspirations.
  • Support your academic success holistically, offering empathy, encouragement, and accountability as you move through your academic journey.

Our advisors are here not just to answer questions—but to help you grow as a scholar, designer, and future professional.

Advising is a collaborative process, and your active engagement is essential to making the most of your educational experience. In keeping with the NACADA Core Values and the student-centered mission of the Gibbs College of Architecture, students are encouraged to:

  • Take ownership of your academic journey by becoming familiar with degree requirements, academic policies, and college expectations.
  • Actively participate in advising meetings by coming prepared with questions, goals, and relevant academic materials.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date academic records, including tracking your degree progress and following through on action steps discussed during advising.
  • Communicate openly and honestly about your interests, challenges, and goals to foster a supportive and productive advising relationship.
  • Ask questions and seek clarification when something is unclear—advisors are here to support your understanding and decision-making.
  • Engage with campus resources and opportunities recommended by your advisor to support your academic success and personal growth.
  • Check and respond to university communications regularly, including emails and enrollment notices, to stay informed and on track.
  • Schedule advising appointments in a timely manner, especially during key registration and planning periods.

Advising is most effective when it’s a shared responsibility built on trust, respect, and mutual commitment to your success. Take ownership of your decisions and actions that affect your educational progress and goals.
