Gibbs College of Architecture Professors Amber Brown and Amy Leveno led 29 students to Dallas, Texas, in September for a learning experience as part of their Design 7 Studio course.

The day began with a site visit to the Design District, the location of the studio’s conceptual project this semester. Once a former warehouse district, the Design District has evolved into a concentration of galleries, showrooms, restaurants, museums, studios, and creative businesses. The district’s existing architecture provided important context for the students’ project, with surrounding brick warehouses and industrial buildings establishing a material and spatial vocabulary that students explored and documents during their visit. The site is also bounded by the Trinity River Levee.

The conceptual client for the studio project is a glassblowing collective requiring spaces for glassblowing, teaching, demonstrations, community outreach and exhibitions. To help students better understand the requirements of this specialized program, the group visited Dallas Glass Art/ Carlyn Ray Designs for an in-depth tour of its hot shop, support spaces, and gallery. Students also participated in a workshop, where each student made their own glass vase. After several hours at Dallas Glass Art, the group headed to grab a late lunch at various eateries at Sylvan Thirty, a Lake Flato designed mixed-use project in West Dallas.

The day concluded with a walking tour of downtown Dallas, ending at the West End Square, followed by a visit to Corgan, a multinational architecture and design firm. The visit gave students an opportunity to learn more about professional practice and experience the work environment of a leading architecture and design firm.
