In May, students from the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture's Architecture, Environmental Design, and Interior Design programs participated in an intensive five-day Studio in Residence at Taliesin West, the iconic winter home and desert laboratory of Frank Lloyd Wright. Led by Professor Mia Kile, the immersive studio provided students with a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary, hands-on learning within one of the nation's most significant architectural landmarks.

Throughout the week, students conducted an in-depth study of Taliesin West's desert shelters, focusing specifically on the Lotus Shelter and Desert Perch. Working collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams, they documented existing site and structural conditions, evaluated environmental performance, and developed recommendations to improve functionality, preservation, and user experience. By combining field documentation with speculative design strategies, students applied classroom knowledge to real-world challenges in architectural preservation and adaptive design.

The experience extended beyond project work, offering students valuable insight into the ongoing stewardship of Taliesin West. Guided tours of the historic site, guest lectures from architecture and conservation professionals, and discussions surrounding Wright's innovative design philosophy enriched students' understanding of the relationship between architecture, landscape, and environmental responsiveness.

“The Studio in Residence experience fostered critical thinking, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for the relationship between architecture, environment, and history, offering students an unforgettable opportunity to learn within a living architectural landmark,” said Professor Mia Kile.

The Studio in Residence encouraged students to think critically, collaborate across disciplines, and engage directly with the complexities of preserving historically significant architecture while envisioning its future use. Learning within a living architectural landmark provided an unparalleled educational experience that connected design theory, environmental awareness, and cultural heritage.
