Gibbs College to Host Faculty Workshop with AIA/ACSA Topaz Award Winner, Dr. Kathryn Anthony

Tuesday, October 19th from 1:30pm to 4:30pm, join Gibbs College and Dr. Kathryn Anthony, ACSA Distinguished Professor at the School of Architecture, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for a faculty workshop: “Reflecting on the 30th Anniversary of Design Juries on Trial: A Reset for a New Generation.” 

The workshop, held on Zoom, will discuss how architectural educators can transform design reviews into better teaching and learning experiences for students, faculty, and visitors.  

Kathryn H. Anthony Ph.D. is the longest-serving female faculty member in the history of the School of Architecture, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is the recipient of national awards from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA), American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award from Chicago Women in Architecture (CWA). 

She recently received the 2021 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education, the highest award bestowed upon an architectural educator. 

A frequent media spokesperson on diversity issues in design, her books include Defined by Design: The Surprising Power of Hidden Gender, Age and Body Bias in Everyday Products and PlacesShedding New Light on Art Museum Additions: Front Stage and Back Stage Experiences (co-authored with Altaf Engineer); Designing for Diversity: Gender, Race, and Ethnicity in the Architectural Profession; and Design Juries on Trial: The Renaissance of the Design Studio. She has also testified before the US Congress about gender issues in design.

Remembering Robert L. Wesley

Robert L. Wesley, a pioneering architect and beloved mentor, has died at age 88. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma, Wesley joined Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) in 1964 and became the firm's first Black partner in 1984. Throughout his career, he contributed to significant architectural projects while maintaining a strong commitment to civic engagement and professional mentorship.
