A student team from the Gibbs College of Architecture recently competed in the Design-Build Institute of America’s National Competition. The National Design-Build Student Competition provides emerging design-builders the opportunity to create a project as a team, present it to some of the industry’s leading professionals and earn national recognition for their good work.
Under faculty advisor Dr. Tammy McCuen, Jeff Stout (captain), Devon Burkhalter, Dominique Equarte, Alexandra Liever, and Ethan Watson competed in a two-phase Design-Build project for a new student health facility on a university campus. The team members are students in Construction Science, Architecture, and Architectural Engineering. The submissions were evaluated based on the principles and best practices of design-build project delivery.
The University of Oklahoma team placed first in the Southwest Region and will represent the Southwest at the upcoming national conference in Denver, Colorado. Congratulations to these students and Dr. McCuen!

Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture professor and Institute for Quality Communities Director Dr. Amber N. Wiley’s book, Model Schools in the Model City: Race, Planning, and Education in the Nation’s Capital, has received two major honors from the Urban History Association.
Research initiated by Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture alumna Naila Hasan during her master’s studies at the University of Oklahoma has continued through faculty collaboration and resulted in a peer-reviewed publication in HERD: Health Environments Research & Design Journal.
