During the summer of 2018, Urban Design student Katie Wing interned with the Transportation Division of the Indian National Council of Governments. Read more about her experience below!
How has your education at OU prepared you for this internship?
My studies thus far at the Urban Design Studio have given me the tools and strategies to navigate the field of public transportation. It does not matter what component of the city you are working with, you will always return to the basic principles of urban design, which rely heavily on community engagement and observational research.
What surprised you most about your internship?
What surprised me most about this internship was the variety of projects I worked on, which definitely kept things interesting. Some days I was out doing bicyclist/pedestrian counts at high-collision intersections or distributing surveys whilst riding the city bus, and other days I was indoors working on urban design guidelines, renderings for an international public space, etc. It has truly been a multi-faceted experience.
How does this internship relate to your career goals?
This internship gave me the invaluable experience of working in the transportation realm, which contributes to my overall goal of working on building healthy communities.

In May, students from the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture's Architecture, Environmental Design, and Interior Design programs participated in an intensive five-day Studio in Residence at Taliesin West, the iconic winter home and desert laboratory of Frank Lloyd Wright.
