Becoming Licensed

Becoming Licensed

Licensure as an architect begins with gaining professional experience. At the University of Oklahoma, students take this step through the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), a national framework developed by NCARB. OU’s Cooperative Education Preceptorship (CEP) builds on this by placing fourth-year Bachelor of Architecture students in full-time, paid internships that count toward AXP credit. Together, these programs help students connect academic learning with real-world practice as they prepare for professional licensure.

Architectural Experience Program (AXP)

To become a licensed architect in the United States, you must complete the Architectural Experience Program, or AXP. This program is developed by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and is required by most state licensing boards. It provides a structured way to gain and document professional experience in the field.

AXP guides you through a range of tasks that reflect the phases of architectural practice. As you work through the program, you'll develop the skills needed to practice architecture independently and responsibly. The experience areas cover everything from site analysis and design development to project management and construction documentation, helping you prepare for the full scope of professional work.

Cooperative Education Preceptorship (CEP)

The Cooperative Education Preceptorship (CEP) Program connects academic study with professional experience by placing fourth-year Bachelor of Architecture students in full-time, paid internships during the spring semester. Students gain practical skills, contribute to real-world projects, and earn credit toward the NCARB Architectural Experience Program (AXP), advancing their path to licensure.

What is the CEP Program?

The Cooperative Education Preceptorship (CEP) Program is a required, full-time, spring-semester internship for 4th-year Bachelor of Architecture students. Instead of attending studio or other courses during this semester, students work in a paid position at an architectural firm or approved professional setting, gaining additional experience and earning credit toward the NCARB Architectural Experience Program (AXP), a step toward professional licensure.

Who Participates?

  • Students: All OU B.Arch students are required to complete the CEP Program prior to graduation.
  • Firms: Any architecture or related design firm meeting the program requirements, with a licensed architect serving as the AXP supervisor so that students’ hours may qualify for either A or O settings set forth by the AXP Guidelines. Refer to the NCARB website for the current AXP Guidelines pdf.

Key Details

  • Duration: Minimum of 320 hours (about 8 weeks full-time)
