Zack Lissau

Zack Lissau was recently elected as the University of Oklahoma's Student Government Association president. A public relations major, Lissau utilized the skillset he is gaining through his studies throughout his campaign. The junior recently shared about that approach, his “why” for running for president and more. 

Why did you choose to study public relations? 
When I came to OU, I began my journey as an international business major. I’ve always had a deep appreciation for public service and politics. Public relations presented me with the opportunity to find a balance between reading, writing and fostering valuable relationships. I noticed there was significant room in Gaylord to begin with a simple idea and watch it grow into something more.

How did you use your background in public relations to help inform your campaign for SGA?
Public relations places an emphasis on quantitative and qualitative data. Due in large part to the classes I’ve taken thus far, I knew it would be important to speak with students face-to-face and inform them why they should care about student government. My previous roles on campus allowed me to be an observer and understand where there’s a lack of communication. Therefore, my team and I made it our goal to be as transparent as possible and provide information about the work we wanted to accomplish.

What do you hope to achieve in your current position?
My ultimate goal is to cultivate community. I’d like to enhance the student experience in a positive way, creating a space and culture that celebrates people.

What’s next for you? 
As a native Oklahoman, I’d like to stay in the state and live a life of service. I’m currently on the pre-law track and will most likely pursue law school after completing my undergraduate studies. Ultimately, I want to be part of meaningful, engaging discussions and use my skill set to help others.
