Christine Souza is a percussionist with an emphasis in orchestral performance and contemporary percussion music. Christine is the principal timpanist of the Missouri Symphony. She is also a member of the Fort Smith Symphony and can be heard on their critically acclaimed recording of works by Florence Price. She has also performed regularly with the Tulsa Symphony, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the Lawton Philharmonic. She is active as a freelance musician in the Oklahoma City metro area. She was also a guest at the International Festival of Music in Belém, Brazil, where she performed a recital, gave masterclasses, and performed with the festival orchestra.
Christine received her doctoral and master’s degrees at the University of Oklahoma, where she studied with Richard Gipson and served as a teaching assistant in the percussion studio. During her time at OU, she taught percussion lessons, directed the percussion ensemble, taught the percussion methods course, and served as the Assistant Editor of the OU Percussion Press. She performed with the ensemble at a PASIC showcase concert. She can be heard on the OU Percussion Orchestra’s recording of works by Eric Ewazen, as well as on their CD “The Night Watch.” She received her Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she studied with Julia Gaines and Robert Burke.
Christine is currently a Lecturer of General Music at the University of Oklahoma, where she teaches World Music and African Repercussions. In 2022, she led a study abroad program at OU’s study abroad center in Arezzo, Italy.
