Franco-American composer Anne-Valerie “A.V.” Brittan studied piano at the Cannes Conservatory of Music in France. She graduated with a degree in musicology from the University of Nice, France, before earning her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in Music Composition from the University of Oklahoma.
Dr. Brittan has studied composition and music theory with Drs. Marvin Lamb, Roland Barrett, Rob Deemer, Ken Stephenson, and Sarah Ellis. She wrote music for various plays directed by Dr. Fabrice Conte at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, and at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Oklahoma. She also composed two movie scores, The Downwinders (2008) and The Good Soldier (2009), directed by Lance Brittan and Aaron Gibson respectively. In 2010, AV Brittan won the Michael Hennagin Composition Competition with her string quartet, Octobre. She was also the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships at the OU School of Music during both her undergraduate and graduate studies. Some of her music is published with Solitarius Press and her piece Landscapes is featured on Duo Advanzando’s second CD, Projecting Back. In 2022, Dr. Brittan published her first textbook, Noteworthy: The Story of Western Music, which was specifically (and lovingly!) designed for her Music Understanding classes here at the University of Oklahoma.
