Emphasis in Jazz

  • MUTE 1120/3120 Jazz Ensemble* (4 credits)
  • MUTE 2271/4271 Chamber Jazz (4 credits)
  • MUTE 4970 Jazz Improvisation (4 credits)
  • MUNM 2313 Jazz History (3 credits)

Total Credit Hours: 15

* Students can substitute additional credits of chamber jazz or applied jazz lessons for jazz ensemble credits.

Emphasis in Academic Studies

15 hours within the School of Music:

  • MUTH 3783 Forms and Analysis (3 credits)
  • MUTH 3763 Counterpoint or MUTH 4853 Orchestration (3 credits)
  • Additional upper division coursework in MUSC, MUTH, MUTK, or COMP (9 credits)
  • Student’s capstone paper will adopt research methods learned in their academic emphasis.

18 hours outside of the School of Music:

  • Two semesters of advised foreign language (6-10 credits)
  • Additional coursework advised/student’s choice (8-12 credits)

Total Credit Hours: 33

  • MUTK 4163* Real-time MIDI Control (3 credits)

* - MUTK 4163, 4143, and 4173 have prerequisites.
