Thank you for your interest in FIT Academy for Personal Training. Fitness and Recreation is an Education Partner with the American Council on Exercise (ACE). This course is designed to give students the knowledge and understanding necessary to prepare for the ACE Personal Trainer Certification Exam and become effective personal trainers. 

ACE is the leading nonprofit exercise professional and health coach certification organization. Their goal is to set the highest industry standards, elevate the careers of professionals, and help people worldwide make movement the mission. They offer NCCA-accredited certifications and are a member of the Coalition for the Registration of Exercise Professionals (CREP). This nonprofit organization was developed to advance and elevate the standard of the fitness professional. 

The benefit of the course is to not only provide direction while preparing for the certification exam, but to offer hands-on practice of the required skills. Students will be prepared with the necessary knowledge and skill needed for application in the real-world upon completion.

Course Information: 

Cost: $79+tax (excludes cost of study materials) 

Course Length:  Eight weeks, June 14 – August 5 

Maximum Enrollment: 10 students 

Meeting Days:  

  • Large Group Session (via Zoom) 1.5 hours Mondays - 3-4:30pm 

  • Small Group Lab (in-person) 1.5 hours - Schedule to be determined.  

  • Small groups will be comprised of 2-3 students for maximal hands-on practice. 

  • A regular weekly meeting time will be set for each small group based on participant and instructor availability. 

Course Expectations:

  • Attendance to all sessions is highly encouraged 

  • Completion of a pre- and post-course assessment to test knowledge gained during the course will be required 

  • To be successful, study time/homework will be necessary in addition to scheduled sessions and labs 

  • This will include reading chapters, completing assignments, and watching recorded chapter reviews prior to each designated meeting time 

  • An estimated 3-6 hours outside of meeting times is needed for most individuals 

  • This course has a strong emphasis on exercise science. Those with current knowledge of subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology, may require less time to prepare 

  • Each participant will be expected to act as trainer and client during small group sessions. This will include practice scenarios for all components of personal training: review of health history, goal setting, conducting fitness assessments, program design, and conducting training sessions.  COVID protocol and guidelines will be adhered to during these sessions. 

Study Materials:

Upon registration for the course, students will be provided a special link to receive discounted prices on required and supplemental study materials. 

  • Required Study Materials: ACE The Exercise Professionals Guide to Personal Training textbook ($99.95+tax, retail $149.95+tax) 

  • Supplemental Materials: While not required for FIT Academy, ACE offers several study tools for the exam including practice tests, video tools, and workbooks. Students can purchase all study materials at a discounted rate. 

Course Learning Objectives: 

Following the completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Identify anatomical structures 

  • Identify basic contraindications to exercise 

  • Describe the role and responsibilities of a certified personal trainer 

  • Explain basic principles of exercise physiology 

  • Explain the relationship between nutrition and physical wellness and performance 

  • Evaluate clients for safe participation in an exercise program 

  • Demonstrate proper use of fitness assessment equipment 

  • Determine appropriate fitness assessment practices for a varied population 

  • Demonstrate proper exercise technique and form 

  • Design safe and effective exercise programs based on client needs and goals 

  • Apply the ACE Mover Method 

  • Use the ACE IFT Model in professional practice 

Certification Exam Requirements: 

Students can schedule the exam on the ACE website. Information will be provided for discount code upon course completion. 

  • Exam Registration Fee: $399+tax (retail $499 + tax) 

  • Exam is 150 question, multiple choice, 3 hours in length 

  • Must obtain a score of 500 out of 800 to pass 

  • Due to COVID, at home certification with live proctoring is currently available 

  • University of Oklahoma is also a testing site for the exam 

  • Current CPR/AED Certification – must be a certification that includes practical demonstration of skills 

  • Fitness and Recreation offers American Heart Association CPR/AED certification courses. 

  • AHA Heartsaver AED with Adult CPR - $60+tax 

  • Fee for CPR/AED certification is waived for employees of Fitness and Recreation 

Maintaining Certification Status:

As with all professional certifications, continuing education must be completed to maintain certification status. 

  • Certification is valid for two years 

  • Must maintain CPR/AED certification 

  • 20 hours of ACE approved continuing education must be obtained over the two-year period 

  • For recertification, submission of CECs and payment of a recertification fee ($129) is required
