Write a 4-6 page typewritten essay that persuades your audience that your evaluation of a controversial subject is justified. In your essay, you will need to present the subject of the essay, make a judgment about the subject, support that judgment, and respond to conditions of rebuttal. You will avoid plagiarism by documenting all of your sources accurately using MLA style. The authors of the most successful essays will :
1. include a clear, complete presentation of the subject being evaluated.
2. use a claim that makes a clear, emphatic judgment about the subject.
3. use the Toulmin system to plan strong support for the evaluation
claim. The support will include:
a variety of reasons to support the judgment.
grounds that support the reasons.
warrants that justify the reasons. (The warrants will be
the criteria or sharable standards against which you can measure the subject).
any backing that is necessary for warrants that are used.
conditions of rebuttal and persuasive responses to them.
4. document all sources in a Work Cited page.
5. use source material without plagiarizing.
6. draft the essay at least once and have it reviewed by classmates.
7. organize the essay appropriately for the target audience.
8. write thoughtful reviews of 2 classmates’ essays.
