Assignment Number 1
This essay assignment will be only the skeleton of a full essay.
Consider your two previous assignments of claim and reasons, and conditions
of rebuttal as drafts of this first essay. Reorganize your ideas
in the classical argument form (see p. 64), add an introduction and conclusion,
type, proofread, polish, and then print 2 copies of this essay. Your
goal is to produce at least 3 typewritten pages. This first essay
will not satisfy all of the criteria of an academic argument, but it will
be a step in that direction. Do not worry too much if this first
essay is not entirely satisfying to you. We will be elaborating on
this basic form of an argument in the next assignment.
The most successful essays will:
1. Have a clear, qualified, and arguable claim (or position statement).
2. Have a variety of reasons to support the claim.
3. Include conditions of rebuttal.
4. Respond respectfully to the conditions of rebuttal.
5. Use the Classical Argument organizational plan on p.64.
6. Be a minimum of 3 pages long.
7. Have scholarly polish.
