DISC Seed Funding Opportunities, FY2022

DISC & SCC Seed Funding Teaming Session

We are excited to announce that the Data Institute of Societal Challenges (DISC) and Stephenson Cancer Center (SCC) are co-hosting a seed funding teaming session to connect OU researchers across disciplines in support of data-science enabled cancer research. To facilitate research in this area, DISC and SCC will be providing seed funding of up to $100k to 1-2 research teams based on the review of submitted one-page project descriptions.

The goal of the one-pager is to convey a project idea to address a problem and to capture the attention of funders and other stakeholders. The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) has provided an excellent framework for presenting a compelling one-pager. A one-page proposal should generally address the following four questions, though headings can be tailored to your specific audience:

  1. What is the problem to be addressed?
  2. What have others done to solve the problem?
  3. Why has the problem not been solved (what is the gap)?
  4. What will you do to fill the gap?

The one-pagers will be judged by a committee comprised of OU Norman, OUHSC, DISC, SCC, and CFE. Finalists will be asked to submit a rough budget. The funds can be put towards the following OU activities: support faculty and grad student time, team-building meetings, stakeholder engagement/outreach, and acquiring or collecting pilot data.

Requirements:

  • Participation from both OUHSC and OU Norman/Tulsa is required (At least one faculty member from each campus)
  • Each team must consist of at least 1 DISC member and an SCC Full or Associate program member

Tentative Timeline:

  • Nov 15th – Submit One-Pagers for Feedback
  • Nov 22nd – Feedback will be sent back to teams
  • December 6th – One-Pagers Due
  • Award Announcement – TBD

For any questions, please email disc@ou.edu or CancerResearch@ouhsc.edu

DISC Seed Funding Opportunities, FY2021

DISC Opioid Research Group: Seed Funding for Best One-Pager Project Description(s)

DISC will be awarding $10K across 1 – 3 awards for the best one-page project description for opioid-related research. These awards are an outgrowth of the Opioid Research Group, first convened in 2019.

                2.  What have others done to solve the problem?

                3.  Why has the problem not been solved (what is the gap)?

                4.  What will you do to fill the gap?

The one-pagers will be judged by a committee comprised of OU Norman, OU HSC, DISC, and CFE. The rubric for evaluating proposals can be found here

Finalists will be asked to submit a rough budget. The funds can be put towards the following OU activities: support faculty and grad student time, team-building meetings, stakeholder engagement/outreach, and acquiring or collecting pilot data.

EXTENDED Due Date: June 4th, 5pm

Submit to: Amber Murray at DISC (amurray@ou.edu)

Award Dates: Awards will be announced on June 11th, 2021.

Investigators from all three OU campuses are eligible and encouraged to apply.

For more direction on crafting a one-pagers, please contact Clara Smith, CFE (clara.smith@ou.edu). For questions regarding the award, please contact Erin Maher at DISC and Chair of the Opioid Research Group (erin.maher@ou.edu).

The Convergence of Data Science and Aerospace, Defense, and Global Security (ADGS) Seed Funding Opportunity for OU Researchers

The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) funds research in many areas including health, science, engineering, and social sciences. Data science has the potential to uncover insights, create efficiencies, and increase our trust in scientific findings. John Antonio, Senior Vice President, Office of the Vice President for Research and Partnerships, David Ebert, Director of the Data Institute for Societal Challenges (DISC), and Clara Smith, Associate Director for Research at the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) are hosting a workshop series to connect OU researchers across disciplines and develop research ideas that take on challenges in the strategic vertical ADGS (see the Events tab for more information).

In an effort to facilitate research in this area, DISC is providing seed funding of up to $10K per topic area to successful OU Norman campus research teams that work toward full DOD proposal development. The $10K seed funding will be awarded based on the best one-page project descriptions for the Convergence of Data Science and ADGS research.

The goal of the team one-pager is to convey a project idea to address a problem and capture the attention of funders and other stakeholders. The CFE has provided an excellent framework for presenting a compelling one-pager. A one-page proposal should generally address the following four questions, though headings can be tailored to your specific audience:

                1)  What is the problem to be addressed?

                2)  What have others done to solve the problem?

                3)  Why has the problem not been solved (what is the gap)?

                4)  What will you do to fill the gap?

The rubric for evaluating proposals can be found here.

The team one-pagers will be judged by members of DISC, CFE, and invited reviewers. Finalists will be asked to submit an estimated budget. The funds can be put toward the following OU activities: support faculty and grad student time, team-building meetings, stakeholder engagement/outreach, and acquiring or collecting pilot data.

Please submit your team one-pager via email to the DISC Team at disc@ou.edu.

One-Page Due Date: Monday, June 7th by 5pm

Eligibility: This seed funding opportunity is limited to OU Norman campus researchers.

Award Dates: Awards will be announced on June 24th, 2021.

For further direction on crafting one-pagers, please contact Clara Smith at the CFE (clara.smith@ou.edu). For questions regarding the $10K seed funding award, please contact Yessenia Torres at DISC (jimeney2@ou.edu).
