As part of their online lecture series, Frontiers of Data Science for Predicting Merging Diseases, Sungahn Ko, Ph.D., a DISC visiting scholar and an associate professor in the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology in Korea and, presented “Visualization Meets AI for Exploring and Forecasting Spatiotemporal Data” on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.

Sungahn, who received his doctorate from Purdue University, is an expert in visual analytics system design and implementation. He also focuses on machine learning and human-centered artificial intelligence.

“My research focuses on designing visualizations and user interfaces that support humans working with AI systems,” Sungahn said. “I’m also developing a visual analytics system for visualizing, monitoring and forecasting traffic speeds. The goals of my projects are similar to those of DISC: developing new technologies that impact the real world.”

During his two-week visit at the University of Oklahoma, Sungahn is identifying opportunities for research collaborations and grant proposals and is also mentoring graduate students and research associates in the Data Institute for Societal Challenges.

“Under Dr. Ebert’s leadership, DISC has established connections with so many experts in different domains,” Sungahn said. “I know that the high-quality data that DISC provides to their connections is invaluable to their current and future research.”
