July 2022 Seed Funding Projects to Investigate Improved Lithium-Ion Batteries and Child Welfare Database Data Quality


Each month, the Data Institute for Societal Challenges awards up to $10K to research teams conducting data-enabled or data science research with the goal of solving complex societal challenges. This program allows University of Oklahoma researchers explore ideas with the potential for future extramural support.

In July 2022, two projects were selected for funding:


Nanocrystalline Transition Metal Oxides for a New Generation of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Led by Wilson Merchan-Merchan with Coinvestigators Jie Cai, Mrinal C. Saha, Bin Xu and Dong Zhang

This project aims to develop novel structured electrodes with unique physical and chemical properties that will enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries. The team hopes to build an in-house lithium-ion battery prototype with increased performance and stability with novel materials for forming the electrodes.


Pilot Study to Investigate a Systematic Framework to Improve Data Quality for a National Child Welfare Database

Led by Yutian Thompson, Hairong Song, David Bard, Jane Silovsky, Jonathan Picklesimer and Yaqi Li

This project plans to build on a current research collaboration with the National Children’s Alliance and establish a data quality monitoring system for child welfare data warehouses to ensure quality data and help set sound policy and practices to address child well-being.

The seed funding program was established by DISC in December 2020 to incentivize transdisciplinary, convergent research teams focused on tackling grand challenges.
