Dr. Yessenia Torres is a strategic and results-driven leader with extensive experience advancing interdisciplinary research, policy, and community initiatives. As Senior Managing Director of the Data Institute for Societal Challenges (DISC) at the University of Oklahoma, she leads efforts to connect research and innovation with societal needs—overseeing large-scale projects, fostering strategic partnerships, and securing competitive federal and state funding to drive institutional impact.
Her professional background spans higher education, government, and nonprofit sectors, where she has managed multimillion-dollar programs, led cross-functional teams, and cultivated collaborations that deliver measurable outcomes. Before joining OU, Dr. Torres directed strategic initiatives at San Jacinto College District and served in the Texas House of Representatives, where she strengthened legislative engagement and community advocacy across the Greater Houston area.
A certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and dedicated educator, Dr. Torres also teaches graduate project management courses at the University of Oklahoma. Her instruction integrates leadership, applied learning, and industry standards to prepare students for success in complex organizational settings.
Dr. Torres holds a Doctorate from Ferris State University and an MBA with a Human Resources concentration from the University of Houston–Downtown. Recognized for her leadership and service, she has received multiple honors, including the OU Staff Senate Distinguished Staff Member Award and the Vice President for Research Annual Award for Research Excellence.
