Light-matter interactions in condensed matter have been widely used to explore new material properties and develop technologies including photodetectors, lasers, and new quantum technologies. Joe’s group is interested in understanding physical processes to generate, control, and detect light with novel materials. These materials include traditional III-V semiconductors, 2D materials, chemically synthesized nanocrystals, perovskites, and 2D materials. Furthermore, Joe’s group is interested in the creation of new states of light through nanophotonic devices based on dielectric resonators and polaritons in metallic nanostructures.
