MEETING WITH BIG EVENT ORGANIZATIONS The following representatives from organizations presented volunteer recruiting information for The Big Event: American Red Cross The American Red Cross will be at the Promenade Mall in the Center Court from 10am to 3pm for a blood drive. Restrictions for blood donation involve being at least 17 years of age, a minimum of 110 lbs, and have a photo ID. The donor must make sure to get properly hydrated during the 72 hour period prior to donation. It was also suggested to lower caffeine intake and eat plenty of green vegetables. Cautions were issued for anyone with travel restrictions (such as missionary trips to other countries) and those who are taking antibiotics. It only takes about 45 minutes to give blood and the area will be screened off from public view. Also, those giving blood will be eligible for a raffle. Helpers are also needed in the canteen area to hand out cookies and juice, and are also needed in the registration area. Food will be provided for these volunteers. Big Brothers and Sisters Big Brothers and Sisters is hosting a Bowl-A-Thon, which is their single largest fundraiser. Those wanting to start their own team need 5 members. If 5 members are not available, BB&S will match people together for completed teams. It is suggested that all participants get a minimum of $25.00 in sponsors in order to cover the expenses of the lanes, shoe rental, and food (all of which are free to the bowlers). A $125.00 donation will result in a T-Shirt for the bowler, and $300 in sponsors grants a long sleeved T-Shirt. Bowling is at the Broken Arrow Lanes from 2-4pm. Community Food Bang The Community Food Bank is looking for people to work in a variety of areas, and they stressed how nicely they treat their volunteers. There is a product recovery center where 60 volunteers can box and sort groceries and other areas to make food baskets. All volunteers will be provided with food. This is a brand new center and is worth the visit! Patrick Henry Elementary School This year, volunteers will help with spring cleaning including windows and desks. Don’t worry – no bathrooms! Also, volunteers are needed to decorate the doors in order to increase moral for testing. The time will be from 9am until noon, and the PTA is providing some yummy food. Tulsa Habitat for Humanity Tulsa Habitat for Humanity needs volunteers to work in their Re-Store. This is where they recycle old and gently used building materials. It is located at 13th and Norwood, 2 blocks from the Wonder Bread Factory. These materials and goods are used when building new homes. Right now, Tulsa Habitat for Humanity has 12 housing starting in the spring! The Tulsa Zoo The Tulsa Zoo suffered dramatically from the ice storms and has lost a lot of greenage. There is a great need to replant trees, shrubs, and flowers. If you have a green thumb and want to work outdoors, this is your gig! There are also clerical volunteer positions available. Nancy in the OUTSA office has more information about ANY and ALL of these services. OLD BUSINESS A motion was made to approve the meeting minutes from December and February and was approved. Budgets are available for all colleges. The hand sanitizers were approved and we are waiting on arrival. Bedlam Baseball tickets for May 16 were approved. OUTSA will get 120 tickets to sell and should be around $5.00 per ticket with a limit of 4 per student/faculty/administrator. The tailgate party will be catered by Billy Simms BBQ. The Philbrook Museum membership has been renewed. Students can visit the museum free of charge with an OU ID. NEW BUSINESS Graduation Gear Up will take place in the Faculty Staff Lounge. The suggestion box had a letter requesting that the cafeteria open when weekend classes are in session. After discussion, it was determined that this would be an issue with the Bill & Ruth’s contract, but will be brought to their attention. OUTSA does not have control over this contract. VOLUNTEER AND DONATION OPPORTUNITIES The nursing students are involved with the March for Babies, a March of Dimes walk on Saturday, April 26. Contact Jaime Watkins for more details. Also, Courtney needs walkers for her team and has extended her deadline to April 12th.
