Dear OU Community,

As you likely know, legislation required to fund the federal government was not enacted by the September 30 deadline, and today the country finds itself in a government shutdown. While the country – and the university – have navigated these waters previously, we understand these periods of uncertainty can be worrisome. I am writing to share an update on what the university can likely expect during this time and what we are doing to mitigate its impact.

In general, a short-term government shutdown will not impact the education of our students, nor will it significantly affect most of the university’s research activities in the near term. Most projects will continue without interruption; however, impacts could emerge if the shutdown is prolonged. Faculty and staff should work with their Office of Research Services team to navigate any issues that arise.

We also do not anticipate any effect on disbursement of existing federal loans and Pell Grants as these funds have already been disbursed for the semester, though students seeking assistance from the Department of Education or who are in queue for loan forgiveness could experience delays. Students are encouraged to continue to make loan payments. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is open and available for students to be considered for need-based aid.

The university continues to be in touch with its federal delegation. In the meantime, faculty can continue to consult the Office of Research’s Frequently Asked Questions for ongoing updates.

Regardless of geographic location, students enrolled in Norman Campus academic programs may reach out to the Student Financial Center; students enrolled in Health Campus academic programs should reach out to Student Financial Services.

Live On, University,

Joseph Harroz, Jr.
President
