Dear OU Family,

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing this morning of Dr. Berrien Moore III, an internationally recognized leader in Earth science and an invaluable member of our university family. With a career spanning more than five decades in academia, Berrien brought unparalleled expertise and passion to the University of Oklahoma, where he served as Dean of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences and Director of the National Weather Center since 2010.

Berrien’s career was defined by a tireless dedication to advancing the frontiers of science and a lifelong commitment to addressing the complexities of Earth’s climate. His work as Principal Investigator of NASA’s Geostationary Carbon Cycle Observatory (GeoCarb) mission placed OU at the forefront of climate research, demonstrating his visionary approach to tackling some of the world’s most pressing environmental issues. As a Coordinating Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Berrien contributed to the body of work that garnered the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. His efforts brought international acclaim to the research he championed and inspired future generations to approach science with the same relentless curiosity and drive for impact. He fostered a collaborative environment within the National Weather Center, enhancing its global reputation as a hub for meteorological research and education.

While his professional achievements were monumental, those who had the privilege of knowing Berrien will remember him for his brilliant wit, unmatched passion for learning, and unwavering dedication to his students and colleagues. He was a scientist who found equal beauty in an artist’s brushstrokes depicting nature’s fury and the elegance of a well-defined mathematical model, recognizing the profound interplay between art and science in shaping our humanity. His ceaseless quest to expand our understanding of our planet – and our place in it – will remain an enduring part of his legacy.

As we mourn his loss, let us celebrate a life that was both impactful and inspiring. We will profoundly miss him as a leader, colleague, and friend. Our hearts go out to his wife, Lucia; his daughter, Leila; and to his entire family, his friends, and all who knew and loved him.

With deepest sympathy,

Joseph Harroz, Jr.
President
