Discover Your Path to Success at OU Polytechnic with the Colloquia Series

"Create your own luck. See it, believe it, and act on it." This message from William Paiva, managing partner at the Oklahoma Life Science Fund, resonated with students at OU Polytechnic Institute (OUPI) during a recent Colloquia Series presentation, inspiring them to take action on their studies and futures.

At OUPI, the Colloquia Series stands out as a transformational experience for students, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world opportunities. This unique course is designed to immerse students in industry insights, sharpen their networking skills, and provide direct access to accomplished professionals like Paiva, who share both their expertise and personal journeys.

The series hosts an impressive lineup of industry leaders, including Paiva, who is one of 14 inspiring guest speakers this semester. Paiva shared his wisdom on translating groundbreaking innovations into market-ready products and instilled in students the mindset needed to thrive in competitive industries.

“It’s vital to show students how to develop the personal and professional approach required to turn ideas into impactful products,” Paiva explained.

The Colloquia Series reflects OUPI’s commitment to fostering a vibrant, connected community where students gain practical knowledge and build networks that extend beyond graduation. For cybersecurity major and part of the first OUPI class Jenna Curry, the series has been an essential part of her educational journey.

“It really sets this program apart,” Curry said. “I already hold a bachelor’s degree from OU, but I didn’t experience anything like this the first time around.”

During his talk, Paiva blended industry expertise with motivational advice, urging students to embrace innovation and bold thinking in shaping the future of their industries. He encouraged students to surround themselves with positive influences, craft their own narratives, and master the art of self-presentation.

“I’ve learned so much over the years, and it’s been quite a journey,” Paiva said. “My goal is to share these lessons early, so students can leap decades ahead of where I was at their age.”

For fellow cybersecurity student Sanaa Byron, Paiva’s personal anecdotes provided a roadmap for tackling the early stages of her career.

“I’m one of the youngest students in my class,” Byron shared. “Learning how to structure my thinking and approach the industry with confidence will be invaluable as I start searching for opportunities.”

The Colloquia Series is more than just a class. The series allows students to connect with professionals from industries, government, academia, and nonprofits. Each session dives into cutting-edge topics like technology trends, workplace skills, and corporate activity.

This one-hour credit course, offered across three semesters as an elective, is a cornerstone of the unique experience at OUPI. It ensures students graduate not only as experts in their fields but as well-rounded professionals ready to make their mark.
