Yingtao Liu has been named associate research director for sustainment and modernization for the Oklahoma Aerospace and Defense Innovation Institute (OADII) at the University of Oklahoma. Liu is the William H. Barkow Presidential Professor in the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and the director of the Smart Materials and Intelligent Systems Laboratory at OU.
“We are very excited to have Dr. Liu as part of our OADII team,” said OADII Deputy Executive Director Col (Ret) Drew Allen. “Yingtao is the perfect person to lead our multiple research lines of effort in advanced manufacturing, supply chain and logistics for the Department of Defense and the aerospace community. He not only brings exceptional expertise to OADII, but also a tireless work ethic and commitment to our mission of turning real-world challenges into solutions.”
Liu will be responsible for executing OADII’s strategic vision for growing sustainment and modernization research and will be responsible for coordinating all OADII’s efforts with OU faculty and external sponsors and customers.

Liu received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Arizona State University, specializing in advanced materials and manufacturing technologies. He has published over 100 journal articles and conference proceedings, documenting his contribution to the development of lightweight structural composites, multifunctional materials and next-generation additive manufacturing systems.
