Metro Kids and Families Invited to Archaeology Day at the Sam Noble Museum

NORMAN, OKLA. – The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History is inviting young explorers and adventurers to experience Archaeology Day with the whole family. Scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, Archaeology Day celebrates International Archaeology Day and includes family-oriented activities and demonstrations, including flint-knapping and atlatl spear throwing.

In addition, visitors can excavate sandboxes, participate in arts and crafts, and take archaeologist-led tours. All activities are included with general museum admission.

International Archaeology Day began in 2011 as a celebration of archaeology and the thrill of discovery. This October, the Archaeological Institute of America and more than 100 archaeological organizations across the United States, Canada and abroad will present archaeological programs and activities for people of all ages and interests.

Though Archaeology Day at the Sam Noble Museum is a celebration of International Archaeology Day, it also coincides with Oklahoma Archaeology Month, a state tradition celebrated every October.

Oklahoma Archaeology Month celebrates the history of Oklahoma as archaeologists and museums across the state host special events for public audiences to increase awareness of the diverse archaeological and cultural preservation projects that blanket the state and to promote public involvement in archaeology. Families are invited and encouraged to meet real archaeologists at the Sam Noble Museum during its Archaeology Day festivities and learn more about this incredible field of study first hand.
