NORMAN, OKLA. – Elizaveta “Lisa” Maslovskaya, a senior at the University of Oklahoma majoring in creative media production and French, has been named to the George J. Mitchell Scholars Class of 2025 by the U.S.-Ireland Alliance.
Maslovskaya is the second OU student to be named a Mitchell Scholar since the program’s establishment in 1998. Out of 350 applicants nationwide, she is one of only 12 students chosen to receive the prestigious scholarship, which sends future American leaders to Ireland for a year of graduate study.
“We are incredibly proud of Lisa Maslovskaya, whose extraordinary scholarly achievements, leadership qualities and commitment to advocacy make her an outstanding recipient of the Mitchell Scholarship,” said OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. “This prestigious award recognizes promising leaders like Lisa, whose motivation is centered on the betterment of others, epitomizing our university’s life-changing purpose. I eagerly anticipate Lisa’s future accomplishments as a Mitchell Scholar and beyond.”
Maslovskaya, of Norman, Oklahoma, is an immigrant from Russia who became a U.S. citizen one year ago. She is a documentary filmmaker who filmed Hurricane Ian in Florida, where she and her team focused on journalists and meteorologists who continued reporting on the disaster through the horrors of the storm. This year, she has received eight awards for her documentaries, including two from the Broadcast Education Association and an undergraduate fellowship to research and film a documentary on the war in Ukraine.
Maslovskaya is set to embark on her academic journey to Ireland in September 2024 at Dublin City University, where she will study documentary practice. Against the backdrop of Ireland’s notable surge in immigrant and refugee populations, she aspires to delve into the intricacies of how the nation addresses the challenges faced by refugees and immigrants. Her overarching goal is to understand the impact host countries have on refugees around the world.
The Mitchell Scholars Program honors former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell for his significant contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process. Up to 12 Mitchell Scholars are chosen annually for one year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Applicants are judged on scholarship, leadership and a sustained commitment to community and public service.
The Michell Scholars Program provides tuition, housing and a monthly living stipend.
