The Nation’s Best: Oklahoma Finishes No. 1 in Final Ranking

April 17, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics

NORMAN — After winning its sixth national title in program history, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team finished the season atop the standings with an NCAA Championships record-tying score of 198.3875 (previously set by OU in 2017). The Sooners held the top spot for the entire 2023 season, their third time to accomplish the feat in program history.

The final ranking is determined by separating the teams into the following groups and ordering them within their group by the following formula:
  • No. 1 - 4: by NCAA Final score
  • No. 5 - 8: by NCAA Semifinal score
  • No. 9 - 16: by adding Regular Season NQS to Round III Regional score
  • No. 17 - 32: by adding Regular Season NQS to Round II Regional score
  • No. 33 - 36: by adding Regular Season NQS to Round I Regional score
  • No. 37+: by Regular Season NQS

OU's six women's gymnastics national titles are tied for the most over a nine-year span in NCAA history (Utah won six of the first nine NCAA championships from 1982-90). The Sooners have won back-to-back champions for the second time in program history (also in 2016 and 2017).

Following OU in the rankings is No. 2 Florida and No. 3 Utah, who finished runner-up (198.2375) and third place (197.9375), respectively, for the second straight year. No. 4 LSU finished fourth (197.525) in its first return to the NCAA Championships since 2021 (first finals appearance since 2019), while UCLA rounds out the top five after its first NCAA Championships appearance since 2019.

Saturday's OU national title capped a 28-2 season that also featured a Big 12 Conference championship and the program's 13th consecutive NCAA regional crown. The Sooners posted a nation-leading 10 scores of at least 198 in 2023, tied for the most in NCAA history. Head coach K.J. Kindler has led the team to the triple crown with Big 12, NCAA regional and NCAA championships all six times the team has won a national title.

Oklahoma has now won 42 team national championships as an athletics department. Twenty-three of those titles (55%) have come under 25th-year athletics director Joe Castiglione.
