Sooners Claim Big 12 Regular Season Title

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The No. 16 Oklahoma women's tennis team clinched a share of the Big 12 regular season title in back-to-back years after downing No. 22 Kansas 4-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The Sooners opened the match by claiming the doubles point. No. 34 Layne Sleeth and Alexandra Pisareva took down Tamari Gagoshidze and Maria Titova, 6-1, on court two. Julia Garcia Ruiz and Dana Guzman followed it up with a 7-5 victory on court three against Carmen Roxana Manu and Jocelyn Massey.

No. 15 Carmen and Ivana Corley were tied 5-5 with No. 50 Malkia Ngounoue and Heike Janse at the top court.

In singles, Emma Staker got things started with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court six over Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez. Kansas answered with a win on court four from Heike Janse Van Vuuren over Pisareva, 6-3, 6-4. Garcia Ruiz followed it up with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 spot against Gagoshidze. The Jayhawks took court two after a 6-3, 6-3 from Titova over No. 121 Carmen Corley. To secure the conference title, No. 57 Sleeth battled No. 64 Ngounoue at the top court for the 7-6, 6-3 win.

When play was halted, No. 89 Guzman was tied with Manu 3-6, 6-4, 3-3 on court three.

The Sooners will travel back to Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the Big 12 Championships on April 20-23.
