Curriculum Overview and Requirements

Two Honors seminars within the Honors College, one lower-level and one upper-level:

  • Honors Perspectives: a 3-credit interdisciplinary seminar that explores a broad subject from different perspectives. This course is writing intensive, requiring at least 15 pages of writing per student, and includes a component wherein each student works with an Honors College writing assistant. Specific topics vary based on the professor's area of study. Perspectives courses are appropriate for freshmen and sophomores.
  • Honors Colloquium: a 3 credit, interdisciplinary, discussion-based advanced seminar on a specialized topic. The colloquium is writing intensive, requiring approximately 30 pages of writing per student, and the assignments will also involve research. Topics vary based on the professor's area of study. Colloquia are best suited for juniors and seniors.

Honors Research 3980: each student must complete 3 credit hours of Research 3980, an independent study through which students work on an original research project with a faculty mentor. Research 3980 can be completed in any department or college, including the Honors College, depending on the student's area of interest. The end result is typically what the student will submit as their Honors thesis. More information can be found here. Honors 3980

Special considerations: Additional hours of Research 3980 cannot count for Honors elective credit. Students majoring in Biology may have additional research requirements. Students with more than one major may be required to take additional hours of 3980; consult an Honors advisor for details.

9 hours of Honors elective credit. Beyond the three requirements above, students must earn 9 elective Honors credit hours. These can be fulfilled in a variety of ways, including:

  • Honors-specific sections of courses offered in departments all across campus. These may also count toward a student's major, minor, or Gen Ed requirements.
  • Honors Reading 3960. This is an independent study that can be completed in any subject area for Honors credit. More information can be found here: Honors College forms
  • Contract for Honors credit. Many regular classes in the university can be contracted for Honors credit if a student makes an advance arrangement to complete extra work for the course. Limit 1 contract per Honors student. More information can be found here: Honors College forms
  • Study abroad. All study abroad programs sponsored by OU give Honors students 3 hours of Honors credit.
  • Service Learning classes (This will come into effect for our Fall 2024 graduates)
  • Special seminars including those offered within OSLEP, Feaver-MacMinn, Puterbaugh, and Neutstadt programs. Consult an Honors advisor for details.
  • Students may also choose to take additional courses within the Honors College to earn elective credit.
