Dr. Jaime Hough understands the important role faculty and staff play in a student's journey. Graduate Student Life offers resources for faculty and staff to aid graduate students as they transition from scholar to innovator. GSL is launching the Student-Scholar-Innovator first year seminar series starting Fall 2022. Topics range from “writing and grading,” to “your scholarly brand.” This 12-workshop series is offered in-person and via Zoom. Hough said GSL helps staff in adapting successful programs from other populations to be graduate student specific.
“Graduate students don't exist in a vacuum, which is why we work to make sure that faculty and staff have resources to best serve their graduate students,” said Hough, Director of Graduate Student and Postdoc Retention and Support. “For students themselves we provide webinars on a range of topics from mental health to financial health to academic and non-academic job preparation”
In addition to its seminar series, GSL will debut two other programs for students — a cohort for women scholars and finding funding opportunities.
“The University of Oklahoma is investing in the long-term success of graduate students and postdocs,” Hough said. “Most universities shy away from a student if their future is not in higher education. At OU, we are creating programming that helps students see the skills they are learning as fundamental skills of innovation, which can help them find fulfilling work in any industry.”
Hough said the goal is to connect students to resources that can improve their success. “This is the type of support I wish I had when I was in school,” she said. Hough offers individual and group coaching, professional development, workshops, and speaking engagements.
Hough received a PhD in American Studies from Purdue University and an MA in Communication from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. When she isn’t passionately helping students, she refinishes furniture.
