Bennie ‘Ben’ Leon Graves peacefully passed away at his home in Norman, OK on November 11th, 2024, at the age of 79. He was born on February 15, 1945, to Bennie Emory Graves and Margie Faye (Myers) Graves in Denison, Texas. Ben was raised in Oklahoma City and graduated from Capitol Hill High School in 1963. He then went on to the University of Oklahoma, where he graduated with a degree in Architecture, followed by an enlistment in the U.S. Navy.
The Navy took Ben and his family to Newport, Rhode Island, where he attended Officer’s Candidate School. There, he worked part-time at a small local architecture firm where he designed a park located in Newport Harbor. He and his family moved back to Oklahoma in 1971 where he interned for Fred Quinn. Ben became a registered architect in 1974 and started his firm, Ben Graves & Associates, located on Campus Corner, and later known as Architects in Partnership. As an architect, he designed cherished spaces across Norman and Oklahoma City, with a focus on the design and development of private residences, public education projects, and commercial developments.
Ben received an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Merit award in 1983 for his interior design of the Summit Building office in Norman. He was appointed to the State Board of Licensed Architects and Landscape Architects by the Governor in 1992, on which he served three terms. From 1992 until his retirement in 2010, Ben served on various boards and committees in the industry. He continued working on projects despite his retirement, most recently his Lake Texoma residence. In 2023, he was recognized as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Capitol Hill Hall of Fame.
Ben is survived by his two sons, Darren Graves and Matt Graves, his three grandsons, Davis Graves, Reid Graves and Jackson Graves, and his brother and sister Richard Graves and Linda Stewart.
A private graveside service will be held for the family with a Celebration of Life to follow in January.

A team of Construction Science and Architecture students from the Gibbs College of Architecture made their mark on the national stage this week, earning third place out of 37 universities competing at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Competition, held during the International Builders' Show in Orlando, February 16-18, 2026.
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has elevated Gary Armbruster, FAIA, ALEP to its prestigious College of Fellows—AIA’s highest membership honor—for his exceptional work and sustained contributions to architecture and society. Fellowship recognizes architects who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession and made a significant impact at a national level. Members elevated to this distinction carry the FAIA designation after their name.
Students from the Spring 2026 Graduate 4 Architecture Design Studio, led by Professor Amy Leveno, exhibited their work at the School of Visual Arts. The exhibition, titled Reimagining the OU School of Visual Arts, featured drawings, models, and animations developed throughout the semester's studio project. The show was hosted in The Spotlight, a creative gallery space located on the first floor of the Fred Jones Art Center, and ran from January 20–30, 2026.
