Architect Tiziana Proietti and her research partner Sergei Gepshtein joined as faculty members for the 2022 Academy of Neuroscience For Architecture (ANFA) Bootcamp. Proietti is an assistant professor at the Gibbs College of Architecture and director of the Sense|Base Laboratory at OU. Sergei Gepshtein is a scientist and affiliate of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and director of the Center for Spatial Perception & Concrete Experience at the University of Southern California.
ANFA is a nonprofit organization based in San Diego, California that promotes and advances knowledge that links neuroscience research to a growing understanding of human responses to the built environment. This bootcamp, titled “Design, Space, Motion,” was specifically tailored for architecture and design professionals who are interested in advancing their design practices by incorporating neuroscience and cognitive science ideas.
Over the course of three days, this bootcamp provided practical, hands-on lessons for its 52 practitioner-participants. The program focused on how to improve human-centered design by incorporating information about human perception and orienting behavior. This included themes of dimensionality and proportion, motion and navigation, and embodied and enactive experience.
As a research team, Proietti and Gepshtein presented their work on the perceptibility of architectural proportion and introduced an innovative, evidence-based method of vision training for designers. Proietti delivered a lecture, titled “Perceiving Architectural Proportion,” that elaborated on research findings and experiments from OU’s Sense|Base laboratory. Sense|Base is an integrative laboratory housed at the Gibbs College of Architecture, and is directed by Proietti. This lab combines both architecture and neuroscience, with an emphasis on the perception of architectural proportions.
Together with Gepshtein, Proietti created a practicum, “Tools to Study the Human Experience of Space,” where the research related to the perceptibility of architectural proportion was put to the test. Bootcamp participants performed a series of practical exercises using proportional instruments first developed by the Dutch architect Hans van der Laan (1904-1991).
A new session of lectures and practicum will occur at the 2023 workshop in Guadalajara, Mexico from March 27 to April 7, 2023. This program, titled “Moving Boundaries: Human Sciences and the Future of Architecture,” will bring together distinguished international speakers, including scientists, architects, historians, and philosophers. These professionals will highlight the impacts that the built environment has on the health and well-being of humans.
A team of Construction Science and Architecture students from the Gibbs College of Architecture made their mark on the national stage this week, earning third place out of 37 universities competing at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Student Competition, held during the International Builders' Show in Orlando, February 16-18, 2026.
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has elevated Gary Armbruster, FAIA, ALEP to its prestigious College of Fellows—AIA’s highest membership honor—for his exceptional work and sustained contributions to architecture and society. Fellowship recognizes architects who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession and made a significant impact at a national level. Members elevated to this distinction carry the FAIA designation after their name.
Students from the Spring 2026 Graduate 4 Architecture Design Studio, led by Professor Amy Leveno, exhibited their work at the School of Visual Arts. The exhibition, titled Reimagining the OU School of Visual Arts, featured drawings, models, and animations developed throughout the semester's studio project. The show was hosted in The Spotlight, a creative gallery space located on the first floor of the Fred Jones Art Center, and ran from January 20–30, 2026.
