Students in Architectural Making II and Graduate Architectural Design II were recently assigned a short project in one of two workshops led by visiting instructors.
Christian Dagg, Head of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at Auburn University, and Terry Boling, Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati, visited the university to assist students in workshops that challenged their skills and understanding.
In Dagg’s workshop, students were asked to design a new facade and lobby for Auburn University’s Urban Studio in Montgomery, Alabama. Boling asked students to design and fabricate a series of full-scale material joints influenced by the concepts of Bruce Goff and the American School.
The students used collaborative creativity as they worked.
“I learned the importance of seeing past the obvious function of an object or material; that there are more possibilities than the one intended,” said Jordan Brauser, a student in Boling’s workshop.
Students in Dagg’s workshop learned about the importance of drawing and expressing ideas on paper.
“It was a very enriching experience working with Dagg,” said
Amelie Murray, a student in Dagg’s workshop. “He told us a lot about his professional practice and personal experiences.”
“These workshops were a great opportunity for the students to work with some exceptional visiting instructors and spend some time thinking about problem-solving in a way that was both compatible with studio and in contrast to the exercises that we’re doing,” said Prof. Michael Hoffner, studio professor for the students.

In May, students from the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture's Architecture, Environmental Design, and Interior Design programs participated in an intensive five-day Studio in Residence at Taliesin West, the iconic winter home and desert laboratory of Frank Lloyd Wright.
