The University of Oklahoma has received a $150,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to study how generative AI can be integrated into children’s maker-based learning in public libraries.
The project, “Gauging Library Needs for Integrating Generative AI into Children’s Maker-Based Learning,” is led by Dr. Jiqun Liu (PI) and Dr. Yong Ju Jung (Co-PI) from OU’s School of Library and Information Studies.
Building on their OU Summer AI Pilot project, the team will investigate how large language models (LLMs) can support children’s hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computing (STEM+C), while also developing tutorials, training materials, and tools for librarians and instructors. The research will explore both the opportunities and challenges of using AI in informal learning settings, with a focus on advancing children’s AI literacy and strengthening libraries’ role as local learning hubs. The results of this work will help improve the design of maker-based activities to enhance children’s learning outcomes. The project will also inform the development and evaluation of specialized language models and conversational AI tools for facilitating children’s learning, information interaction, and collaboration across different domains and settings
This award highlights OU’s growing leadership in advancing responsible and innovative applications of AI across education and community settings.
